大ヒットとなった「原子心母」のあと、廉価版として発売されたオムニバス。LP未収録だった「アーノルド・レーン」「シー・エミリー・プレイ」を中心とした初期拾遺作品群です。彼らは初期の作品とシド・バレットに特別な思い入れがあり、のちに「ナイス・ペア」というファーストとセカンドのカップリング盤を発売したこともありました。言わばデビュー時の立ち位置を常に確認しているグループでもありました。 シド・バレット在籍時の特徴は「陽気な狂気」です。また「星空のドライブ」のような暴力衝動も後日のフロイドには望めない要素です。この曲からは、当時の演奏力で可能なかぎり、既存の音楽でないものをつくろうという熱気が伝わってきます。「シー・エミリー・プレイ」のポップさは、今聞いても天才だと思いますね。あまり指摘されない彼らの要素として、ユーモアがあります。「原子心母」のB面ぐらいまで彼らは必ず「おふざけ」を入れるグループでした。（以後シリアス路線一筋になってしまいますが…。）バレットがギルモアに交代しての変化は、ドラマティックになり、叙情性あるギターが出てくることです。でも、このオムニバスでは、その片鱗程度しかわからない変化でしょう。 貴重なドキュメントで、他のフロイドの有名作品を聴いた後がふさわしいかもしれません。
