Hyperion is delighted to present the dbut recording by harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani. Esfahani was the first harpsichordist to be named a BBC New Generation Artist as well as the first to be awarded a fellowship prize by the Borletti-Buitoni Trust. On this disc, Esfahani performs CPE Bach's six Wurttemberg Sonatas. His thrilling performances make the best possible case for this dramatic and endlessly imaginative music. The sonatas range stylistically from Sturm und Drang to High Baroque to the idiom of CPE Bach's famous father. Mahan writes in his booklet notes that CPE Bach, makes the most combative statement possible to assert his new musical language.

いい演奏ですね。M.Esfahaniの演奏は、意外とその真価を明らかにしづらいC.P.E.Bach演奏において、現時点で望み得るベストな再現の一つと言えるのではないでしょうか。疾風怒涛期の代表的な作曲家として、C.P.E.Bachに求められるのは、確実な技術による生命力に溢れた演奏でしょうが、一方で、ともすると単調で勢いだけの音楽に聴こえかねない。M.EsfahaniはC.P.E.Bachの、どちらかと言えば若い時代のこの曲集を、深い理解と心からの共感を持って、生き生きと、そして細部を疎かにせず繊細に演奏しており、これがこの盤に並のC.P.E.Bach演奏にはめったにみられない、ある種の気品、高貴さを与えています。確かにこれは現代音楽に至るまで、あれだけの名演を成し遂げる能力を持ったM.Esfahaniにして、初めて実現できたことなのでしょう。実はM.EsfahaniのJ.S.Bach演奏には、未だに十分満足できたことはないのですが、このC.P.E.Bachは文句なしの良演と言えると思います。決して目を見張るような派手さはありませんが、古典派以前、古楽、バロック音楽に親しむ方なら、お聴きになって損はないと思います。
