前作『ライク・ア・ヴァージン』で旋風を捲き起こしたマドンナが、アーティストとしての力量を存分に発揮し、完全なる世界制覇を成し遂げたアルバム(1986年発表)。本作からは｢パパ・ドント・プリーチ｣､｢オープン･ユア・ハート｣などがシングル・ヒットした。この作品の前に俳優のショーン・ペンと結婚（結局離婚になりましたが…）。つらかった子供時代を彷彿させる｢パパ…｣に家族に対する彼女の想いを見ると、パートナーを得たことは、本作の契機のひとつとなっている気もする。また本作ではマドンナのダンサブルながらしっとりした個性、女性らしさのようなものが前作にはないポイントとして表出しているのもポイント。
