本作『ソープ・オペラ』はもともと英グラナダＴＶから要請されて書いたミュージカル・サントラで、アメリカのＴＶでお馴染みの「ソープ・オペラ（昼メロ）」をモチーフとした一枚。このミュージカルは英国で前年の1974年に『スターメイカー』というタイトルで放映され、そのとき書かれた9曲に3曲を加えて完成されたのが本作という流れになる。レイ独自の視点や個性はここでも冴えを見せておりファンには嬉しいところだが、セールス的には当然の如く惨敗。
