Oasis' Noel Gallagher ('One x One') and Stereophonic's frontman Kelly Jones ('Call Me No.5') are amongst the artists who pop up as guests on 'Illumination', Paul Weller's eagerly anticipated - and superb - sixth full-length solo recording. Produced by Weller himself, with two tracks, including the single 'It's Written in the Stars', co-produced by Noonday Underground's Simon Dine, this album doesn't so much depart from, as further develop, the sound defined by the modfather on his last outing, 2001's live, acoustic 'Days Of Speed'. Weller's customary strumming is set to a soulful backing - reminiscent of his Style Council days - on standout tracks such as 'Standing Out In The Universe' and 'Leafy Mysteries', while, if it's rocking tunes you're after, fans need look no further than 'A Bullet For Everyone' and the aforementioned 'Call Me No.5', which hark back tothe rockier territory Weller stomped all over during his 'Stanley Road'-era. Additional musicians on the album include Steve White, Steve Cradock and Damon Minchella (Ocean Colour Scene), Gem Archer (Oasis), Carleen Anderson, Jocelyn Brown and Aziz Ibrahim.

とにかく曲のクオリティが異常に高い。スタカンを想起させるサウンド。ウェラー節炸裂で、メロディーが耳に残る曲が連発です。スタカン空中分解を経てソロ初期での不遇時代、スタンリーロード前後の勢いをたどった後に到達した作品という感があり、単純なスタカン回帰ではない。傑作です。
